Le Pont: A Multifunctional Cafe Bridging Spaces and People

Takuji Kamio's Award-Winning Design Connects Customers in a Shared Experience

Le Pont, a multifunctional cafe designed by Takuji Kamio, is a unique architectural marvel that seamlessly blends form and function. Inspired by the concept of bridges as connectors, the design aims to foster spontaneous interactions among guests, offering a shared experience in a space that is both visually and physically interconnected.

The design's inspiration is rooted in a phrase about bridges and walls, which led Kamio to consider how to physically, visually, and meaningfully connect each space and its customers. The result is a design that features a large triangular void at the center, surrounded by various areas such as a bakery, lounge, coffee bar, and restaurant. This open layout encourages guests to interact with each other, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

Le Pont's unique properties lie in its innovative use of space. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a white bridge and staircases within the void. These elements serve as the central point around which all other areas are arranged. The seating layout and open space across the first and second floors further enhance the sense of connection and sharing that is central to the design's concept.

The design realization technology involved the use of concrete with stainless liners, steel, wood finish, and glass with graphic pattern stickers. The bridge, a key feature of the design, measures 1500mm in width, 5000mm in length, and 2700mm in height. The total area of the two-story space is 670 sqm.

Le Pont was designed with a specific sequence of spaces in mind. The first floor houses the bakery and pastry cafe areas, while the second floor is dedicated to the full-service restaurant. This layout guides customers through a sequence of spaces, creating a spontaneous connection that was a key design concern for Kamio.

Despite challenges related to cost control and material selection, Kamio successfully used a variety of materials to create a space that is both dramatic and graceful. Rough materials like concrete were used to keep costs down, while graphical elements such as curved stickers on windows added a touch of elegance. Stainless steel liners on walls were particularly effective in enhancing the space's aesthetic appeal.

Le Pont's design was recognized with the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advancing art, science, design, and technology. Le Pont certainly embodies these qualities, offering a unique space that connects and shares in a truly innovative way.
